When I was a child in Japan, I loved the story "A mermaid and red candles". Recently, I came across the story as an adult and was surprised at the darkness of this story. It's a sad story of human greed betraying the innocence of nature, and the harsh punishment from nature in a return. Nonetheless, the imagery of the story is beautiful to those who are familiar with Japanese culture. (Long black hair, red on white, candle lights at the Shinto shrine, night time darkness in the countryside...)
