"Iwate"

"Miyagi"
Acrylic, 6" x 6" Stretched canvas

I was born and raised in Tohoku, Japan where the awful earthquake and Tsunami hit hard.

I'm a Canadian now and safe in Ottawa, but this disaster deeply saddens me.  I know that most of people outside of Japan have never heard of the Tohoku region in Japan.  And now you may have seen the pictures of Tohoku only in ruins, but there are really lovely and peaceful small towns and villages in this region.

Tohoku is not an exciting big urban area or a high-tech futuristic land you may imagine as Japan. Instead, Tohoku has many beautiful high mountains and rugged, dynamic coastlines.  Lined with lush green landscapes and clean rivers, towns in Tohoku are lovely and endearing.  Farming and fisheries are the traditional way of life.  The people are humble, quiet and hard-working.  They are shy but once you get know them, they are the warm and kind.  They are the heart and backbone of Japan.

We always knew  there could be a big earthquake one day, but Mother Nature outdid herself this time.  Please help Tohoku people.

(Thank you very much for taking time to read this.  It is okay if you can't donate - just please spread the word about the Tohoku people.)

All proceeds from the sales of this painting will be donated to the Red Cross for Japan disaster relief.

This is lovely. It really expresses the subtle beauty of rural Japan.

I'm so sorry to hear of your personal association with Tohoku. I have been so saddened (like everyone else) by this terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to all the people who have suffered such a devastating loss.

Hi Mika,
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope any of your friends and family still there are safe and surrounded with support. It sounds like a beautiful place inhabited by special people. We are sad about this tragedy. My husband also has friends in Japan.
